Hello Friends,

I am Ashok Sanodiya and I welcome you back for one another most important information related to gardening and growing plants and trees.

Today we are going to explain about 7 easy steps to repot a newly bought nursery plant in correct way. Here we have choose this topic as this is the most important process, where most of the people make mistake and after the repotting process their newly repotted plants start decaying or in most of the cases the plants or trees stop their flowering and fruits soon.

So, please understand these 7 repotting or transplanting steps very carefully by reading and understanding this small information till the end.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step Number 1 :

Coming straight to the point, the first step is that, when we bring a new plant from a nursery, then we should always select a healthy plant from the available plants because after we bring the plant to our house, we will be repotting the plant in a completely new environment and if the plant is weak or unhealthy, then there is a high chance that it will not be able to survive after the repotting process.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step number 2 :

The 2nd step is that,
we should repot the new plant in either early morning or late evening. I would recommend repotting it in the late evening because during repotting, the plant will be exposed to the open environment and if the plant gets exposed to direct sunlight as well it may get affected by the transplant shock and this will impact its growth heavily.
So, for preventing the plant from going into transplant stress, we should always try to repot it during the late evening. This will also help the plant to settle in the new soil within one day.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step number 3 :

The 3rd step is that,
we should keep the soil and the container ready in advance before we start the repotting process.
The soil should be well-drained and also be able to retain moisture for a long time. The pot should be of the correct size and have proper drainage holes at the bottom. One more thing we should note is that we should not use any compost or fertilizer during repotting a newly bought nursery plant as it almost always comes from a soil which is already heavily fertilized. So, if we use fertilizers on top of that, the plant will be overwhelmed and end up not growing. In conclusion, we should refrain from using fertilizers on new plants for at least 15 days after repotting them.
After keeping all these in mind, we should fill up the container with soil halfway through for making it easier to repot the plant. This will minimize the root’s exposure to the open environment and we can quickly repot the plant without any transplant shock.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step number 4 :

The 4th will be finally starting the actual repotting.
First of all, it’s important that the soil is firm so that we don’t damage the roots whilst loosening the soil. If it’s dry, then we should lightly water the soil. After this, we take off the polybag from the plant.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step number 5 :

After taking off the polybag, in the 5th step, we will loosen half the soil by softly pressing on it. Always make sure that you don’t accidentally damage any roots. After loosening the soil, we should prune the side roots carefully.
In this step, the most important point is that, we shouldn’t remove the soil completely and try to minimize it carefully because if we remove the soil completely, then there is a high chance that the plant doesn’t survive in the new soil.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step number 6 :

The 6th step is that,
after we have carried out the 5th step thoroughly, we need to keep the plant in the container and cover it properly with your soil.

If we do this process quickly then it will help us to reduce the roots’ exposure to the open environment and roots won’t get damaged.

Repotting Plants and trees - Step number 7 :

The 7th step is that,
after we have repotted the plant in the new container soil, we should water it properly. To make sure we have watered the plant enough, we should keep watering until the water starts to come out of the drainage holes. After this, keep the plant in a fairly shaded area where it won’t be exposed to direct sunlight for at least one week and then it will be safe to relocate the plant to an environment better suited for the specific plant.

So, these were 7 steps which we should always follow whenever we repot a plant. I hope this information helps you and for any further query or advice, please write us in the comments box and we will try to answer you as soon as possible.
